This book was recommended to me by a friend, she said it was one of the best books she had read and even lent me her copy to read, oh and I am so glad she did, this is a beautiful story, heartbreaking, tender, it tells the story of sisters Vianne and Isabelle born ten years apart and what happens when World War 2 breaks out and France surrenders to Germany and the way they both cope. A box of tissues is very necessary.
Vianne is married with a young daughter Sophie when her husband leaves to fight the battle she is sure that the Nazis will not invade and that things will get back to normal very soon, her life is shattered when they do invade and that German officers get billeted in her house. Life is hard without food and money and doing all she can to keep her daughter safe.
Isabelle is wild and strong willed and is sent to stay with her sister in Carriveau, but Isabelle is not keen on staying in the house with a Nazi and she wants to be off fighting with the Resistance, when she meets Gaetan a partisan he says no she stands her ground and takes off to Paris to fight the Nazis anyway she can.
This story shows the strength and courage of the woman and men of the Resistance and what they went through to help win the war, Vianne and Isabelle are so totally different but both do what must be done, through pain, love and heartbreak. I loved this story from start to finish and there were many times I was crying especially at the end, I would highly recommend this one.
