I went and saw the movie when it came out and loved it and then had to read the book and can I say WOW I loved this book it is so good and the movie does it justice, of course the books goes into so much more detail and explains so much, this is a page turner, set over a number of years from 1952 till 1970 it tells the story of the Marsh Girl and it is a must read.
A little town called Barkley Cove on the North Carolina coast, the Clark family live deep in The Marsh they are not a happy close family, the youngest is Kya and at just six years of age her Ma walks out of the marsh, Kya is convinced she will return, but sadly all her siblings leave and she is alone with her abusive alcoholic father and when he leaves not long after Kya is alone in the marsh and her survival instincts kick in.
Kya learns so much from her surroundings and meets a young boy Tate who helps her learn to read and write and so much more, they become the best of friends and more so, but Tate leaves for college and again she is left alone, then Chase Andrews comes on the scene, he and Kya get close over the years and Kya is looking towards the future but again she is left alone.
Then in 1969 Chase is found dead in the marsh and everyone in the town looks to Kya the Marsh Girl as the main suspect, and she is pulled for questioning, but do any of them really know who she is, there are a couple in the town who have befriended her but not many Kya keeps to herself and copes with all the challenges that are thrown her way, her strength and courage are beyond what you would expect after what she has gone through.
This book is so beautifully written the descriptions of the marsh are so good and the characters have come to life on the pages, it is a poignant and compelling story with many emotions flowing throughout and the twist at the end was a huge surprise. I would highly recommend this book, no doubt about it I loved it from page one till the end.
